KennisKapitaal

The South African handbook for owning your business intelligence in the AI age — what your firm knows, where it leaks, and how to keep it.

Every time your business uses AI, it teaches that AI what it knows

Your pricing logic. The way you handle a difficult client. The method you worked out over eleven years and never wrote down. The quote template that wins. Every one of those is fed into a tool by somebody on your team, several times a day, in the ordinary course of getting work done.

Nobody is being careless. They are being efficient. That is the problem: the leak is indistinguishable from good work.

South African law has a view on this, and it is not the view most business owners assume. POPIA governs personal information — but the bulk of what leaves your firm is not personal information at all. It is commercial knowledge, and its protection depends on common-law confidentiality, on your employment contracts, and on terms you agreed to without reading when somebody signed up for a free tier.

What I actually verified

Nine systems, five questions, every answer checked

Before writing the handbook I put the same five questions about data handling to nine AI systems, and then checked every answer against the vendor's own published documentation.

One contradicted itself inside a single session. One offered a South African reader an opt-out mechanism that appears to exist only in the EU. One repeated its maker's favourable framing of a policy that independent reporting disputes. One never answered about itself at all. The most self-critical answer came from the system operating under the jurisdiction most people would trust least.

The full report is Nine Chatbots on Trial, and it is included free with every edition of the handbook. It is the evidence base. The handbook is what to do about it.

What the handbook does

44 pages · English & Afrikaans · the framework I run in my own companies

It is not a warning. Warnings are cheap and I have not found one that changed anything. It is the framework I implement in my own businesses, written down in the order you would actually do it.

  • See the asset. A knowledge register: what your firm actually knows, written down as something you own rather than something everyone assumes.
  • Hold it. The clauses, policies and workflows that keep it yours — under South African law, ready for your letterhead.
  • Let it compound. How to keep using these tools, hard, without handing over the thing that makes you worth hiring.

It is bilingual because South African commerce is, and because a policy your staff only half-understand is a policy you do not have.

Weet wat joune is. Hou wat joune is. Laat groei wat joune is.
Know what is yours. Keep what is yours. Let what is yours grow.
